To Teachers in Henderson County,

The Rotary Club of Hendersonville is proud to announce the 2010 grant application period is now open. Teachers are encouraged to apply for funds for their unique and innovative projects that can make a difference in the learning of their students.

Improving education for the students in Henderson County is the primary focus of the funding efforts of the Hendersonville Rotary Club. The Club wishes to make significant contributions to the education of our young people by assisting teachers in implementing innovative teaching practices.

Grants will be awarded to teachers in May 2010 using the following criteria:

          • The project builds on past successful grant projects
          • The project is replicable at other schools in the county
          • The project includes the children's parents
          • The project prepares students for opportunities for tomorrow
          • The project can become long lasting, even self-sustaining
          • The project focuses on an area not funded by traditional methods
          • The project can attract additional matching funds
          • All of the criteria do NOT have to be met. However, an increasing amount of compliance increases your chances of receiving a grant or a full grant.

Projects may be in any area of study such as science, math, reading, writing, language, economics, life skills, visual or musical arts and all grade levels.

This year we are asking teachers to follow-up on item #13 in the grant application (“How will you measure expected outcomes and benefits to the students?”) by documenting the effectiveness of the grants received.  In past, teachers have sent letters and cards of thanks often including photos.  We love seeing these and know our grants are appreciated.  Please keep sending them!  We would, however, also like to know if the ‘expected outcomes and benefits' were actually achieved.  For example, did test scores improve, and if so, by how much?  We understand that in our effort to reach as many students as possible these grants are often relatively small so expecting leaps in test scores would be unrealistic, but smaller incremental gains may be realized.  We're asking simply – what were the results?  Grant winning applicants will receive a letter requesting such feedback.

We look forward to reviewing your application.

Best wishes for success,

John Monroe
